Hotels are Taking Advantage of the Rise in Popularity of Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is defined as travel that minimizes the negative impacts on the environment and local economies while maximizing its positive benefits. But what can hotels specifically do to green their business? Let’s look at the following examples:

1. If your hotel or vacation rental utilizes green practices, make sure you register your location on the myriad of websites that maintain publicly available lists of sustainable hotels.

2. Make daily linen changes optional and/or upon request only.

3. Move to eco-friendly cleaning products and detergents.

4. Embrace recycling when possible.

5. Source locally for your food menu items.

6. Purchase products with minimal packaging.

7. Compost food waste to support your

gardens and flower beds and reduce waste costs.

8. Eliminate single-use items like small shampoo bottles or other soaps.

9. Install energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures.

10. Install motion detection lighting and HVAC schemes.

11. Have brochures that encourage walking or biking.

12. Make bike or electric bike rentals available on-site.

13. Conduct an energy audit of your entire facility to determine future upgrade priorities with a high return on investment.

Together, we can make travel pleasurable and environmentally friendly!
